La Grande Dame

Valkenburg

La Grande Dame is a characteristic 19th century house, situated in Valkenburg. The owner of this magnificent house dreamed of creating a home for herself on the ground floor and a bed & breakfast on the first floor. She commissioned Chapters to turn the ground floor, her home, into the dream home she envisioned. Keeping the original elements of the house intact and using classic features to honor the heritage of the building.

A balance of the preservation of architectural authenticity with the integration of modern functionality.

The owner of the house loves her black and white floor tiles, as well as the colour green. To integrate the luxury hotel-living style into her house and to connect the ground floor with the first floor, we have created a dark colour palette in a shade of dark green for all the rooms, which radiates luxury. To enhance the classic features, we have painted the original wall paneling in the hallway in the same dark green paint and finished off the wall design with a rich, textured wallpaper. A hint of sage green and a rich use of fabric bring the living room together. From the textured wallpaper to the curtains and the carpet – their luxury feel make this space a room in which you can relax and unwind. The curated modular sofa offers seating on both sides to enjoy both a glass of wine by the fireplace, or an evening of television.

On the ground floor, the hallway tiles are original black and white floor tiles, which are characteristic for the grandeur of the house. Another typical characteristic of this period house is the separate rooms. In the thoughtfully crafted floorpan, we have designed one room as the bedroom, one as the bathroom, one as a living area and one as the formal dining area. The kitchen, which already existed, serves as the heart of the home, a space where culinary delights come to life.

For the bedroom, a glamorous touch was given by the four-poster bed with a custom-made back panel. The statement piece in the dining room is the black and white striped dining table, which could be an object of art on its own. The entire floor comes together with the use of rich textures and dark green paint mixed with hints of sage, in combination with black and white elements. Each room represents the artistic taste of the owner of the house, whilst honoring her wishes to preserve the classic heritage of the building.
